Obituary for John A. Owad

John A.  Owad
JOHN A. OWAD, 93 years of Airville, PA, died Thursday, March 16, 2017 in York, PA. Born April 19, 1923 on a farm in Vanderbilt, Fayette County, PA, he was a son of the late Andrew Theodore and Mary Agnes (Warrick) Owad. Married May 18, 1947, John was the loving husband of his late wife, A. Barbara (Clymer) Owad, who passed September 1, 2013.

John joined the U.S. Army Air Force in April 1943, courageously served in WWII where he was assigned to the 549th Night Fighter Squadron, an all-volunteer unit. He became lead mechanic to the Northrop’s P-61 Black Widow, America’s first purpose-built night fighter. John was re-called to action during the Korean Conflict, assigned to the 1st Fighter Group. John was a true gentleman, a man of his word with great integrity. He was known for his love of old Ford cars and Farmall tractors; his collection included various Model T’s. John also enjoyed the outdoors and had a unique variety of pets. He had strong faith in God and regularly attended McKendree United Methodist Church in Airville as well as the Fawn Grove Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

John is survived by 4 children, many grandchildren, several great grandchildren and a multitude of friends who loved him dearly.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main St., Delta, PA where the funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Interment will immediately follow in Chanceford Cemetery, 1784 Woodbine Rd., Airville, PA with military honors by the York County Honor Guard.
